Enoch Arden

Enoch Arden is a poem by Alfred Tennyson, first published in 1864, and based on a story by his friend, the sculpture and poet, Thomas Woolner.

Staying at the Tregarthen’s Hotel on St Mary’s, Scilly, Tennyson spent most of his time in the garden composing the poem where there is a commemorative plaque noting this.

In 1897 Richard Strauss composed music to accompany the poem for the actor Ernst Von Possart. Strauss and Possart toured together widely with the melodrama, in a German translation by Adolf Strodmann.

In lock down because of Covid I was unable to use any acid because I do not like having this at home so I decided to illustrate Enoch Arden producing 8, A1 mono prints. My husband the pianist – Anthony Seddon, Sam Freegard – the narrator, with sea songs by Michele Sharkey have performed this piece with my illustrations on display.
